What are the top 5 questions you ask PMM candidates when hiring for a new role?
How do you define product marketing? How do you measure success?
What is your superpower?
What do you wish I asked that I didn't?
What's a brand you think is marketed poorly. Why? What would you do to improve it?
Tell me about your favorite campaign, career win, or highlight. Why does that spark joy for you?
What inspires you? What brings you energy?
Why product marketing?
These may seem overly simplistic, but I've found these to be effective even when interviewing for senior PMM roles:
Tell me about your current/last company - what do they do? Who are their customers? What problems do they solve?
When customers pick your company, why (why do they win)? When customers pick competitors, why (why do they lose)?
What launch/program/piece of collateral are you most proud of? What impact did it have? How did you pull it together?
What skill do you have that was the hardest for you, personally, to learn? Tell me about that process.
Looking beyond your industry, what campaign or launch or rebrand (it can be anything) has impressed you over the last few years?
- What does GTM strategy mean to you?
- Can you give me a detailed example of a product launch tier/bucket?
- What stakeholders does the product marketer primarily support in any company and how?
- Who are the stakeholders that the PMM primarily learns from and represents?
- What are the top 3 skills that you believe every product marketer should have?
