How do you evaluate the cost of a developer to the org?

Justine Davis

I don't :) Not my job to hire developers. It is my job to evaluate the role of product marketing and developer advocates, however. I don't typically look at the cost of hiring them, but I do look at the typical business metrics and marketing funnel metrics to ensure we are ROI positive. I partner with a buyer experience team who has developers, designers, product managers that are dedicated to my team to help with our marketing web activity.

This involves a few things...

Direct costs:

  • salary - the most significant direct cost plus any bonuses or overtime

  • benefits: the cost of health insurance, dental, life

  • taxes and social security

Indirect costs:

  • recruitment costs: advertising, interviewing, assessment tests, etc

  • training and onboarding: the cost of training and getting someone up to speed can vary

  • equipment and tools: computer, software, etc

  • continuing education: professional development, certifications

Opportunity costs:

  • innovation and creativity

  • client satisfaction

  • team impact

To calculate: sum up all the direct and indirect costs and you'll have your estimated spend. Review this with your HR team and regularly assess with market bands.
