In a large company, how can you ensure you are making an impact in your role as a product marketer?

Here are some tips I use when I aim to create a significant impact and ensure that people notice it.

  1. Make sure you Align your goals with overall company objectives: This is probably the best way to make sure your product is always prioritized. 

  1. Establish clear and measurable KPIs to track progress towards your goals: It is a basic tip, but the better you can show hard data behind any product results, the easier it is to get notice.

  1. Communicate the impact of your work: Getting the results is one part of the process, you also need to be great at communicated them and make sure your stakeholders understand the impact you bring to the overall business

In large companies, you can make your mark as a PMM through alignment and relationships. Firstly, it's important to ensure your work directly aligns with the company's goals and objectives. Start by familiarizing yourself with your business unit's OKRs (objective key results). For example, if your company is trying to increase market share in a specific region and let's say you have a product launch coming up, you should proactively think through how to position the product and tailor the messaging to resonate with the target audience in that region. My second tip is to focus on nurturing strong relationships across functions and seniorities. This is always the case, regardless of company size, but I know it can be harder within larger organizations so be purposeful and proactive. Set up those coffee chats, make those connections, and make the effort to nurture those relationships.

I would ask your manager what are the top priorities for the broader organization and then push to get projects that support those efforts. In a bigger organization, a lot of good work goes unnoticed because the executive team tends to just focus on the “big rocks” that they are trying to move forward. Therefore, the best way to deliver impact is to complete work that aligns with the things that they care about.
